Disc Health

We all know someone who was completely healthy… until the day they weren’t.

Like my uncle Bill who was fine and having fun until he bent down to pick up a penny and then… writhing in pain… couldn’t stand up straight again.

Must have been a heavy penny… or worse… the infamous villain who can strike at any time without warning…GENETICS!!!

It’s true genetics can play a role, but we have a tendency to forget about the build up of wear and tear that has left 40% of us with a disc bulge we don’t know about.

You read that right… MRI studies have demonstrated perhaps higher than 40% of the general population has a disc bulge in their spine that they don’t know about.

No pain, no known injury, no obvious signs or symptoms…

40%  just walking around with a ticking time bomb of weakened disc tissue waiting for the final straw on the camel's proverbial back…

So what can be done to keep a debilitating disc injury from happening to you?  Plenty!!!

You better warn your Genetics… because we’re not letting them take you down!

Nerve Health

Your nervous system is kind-of important right?  The link to everything.  From the brain out and from the body back in our feedback loops.

It’s like your body’s personal internet connection, and a healthy connection means good feedback from the body and good downstream signaling for healing, hormone regulation, digestion, sleep, you name it.

So, what if I told you that 96% of failing organs had damaged nerve roots related to anomalies of the spine at the specific nerve root in question?

That’s what Dr Windsor (a medical doctor) found way back in 1920 when he published a foundational article about the relationship between spine-function, nerves, and organ systems.

In the human and animal specimens he dissected he found 221 diseased organs, of which 212 were linked to a correlating damaged nerve root at the level of a spinal misalignment.

Skeptics offer a wide range of criticism ranging from the traditional “not a randomized double blind study” or “not replicated” to the more sinister accusations of purposefully misleading the public.  (Don’t get me started, I just wish those skeptics would question things evenly across other industries as well, like pharmaceuticals and nutrition)

Well if you’re one of those skeptics I have a list of some “light” reading for you linked Here

If you’re not a skeptic and you’re ready to take your nerve health (and subsequent organ function) into your own hands, check out my Free Healthy-Nerve-Habits Checklist (click this link).

Posture

Just sit up straight, right? …Just stand taller… do more core, do some stretches, work on your breathing, become a back-sleeper…. Get a better chair, get a standing desk, it must be your shoes, wear inserts, go barefoot… stop looking down at your phone… books… uneven sidewalk… get off the computer… take some energy supplements… release your negative energies… do yoga… meditate on your self worth… walk with a book on your head… sleep on the hard floor… hang upside-down… etc. etc. etc.

OK, SOME of those are good advice but many are too specific and miss the real problem or too broad to actually be helpful.  Some of them aren’t realistic based on our jobs and lifestyles, still others are just plain silly.

I try to take a simple approach to things.  Which is why I’ve created my Initial Steps packet to help people do something simple for a few minutes a day that can actually make a difference.

That’s a pretty small investment towards some pretty big outcomes like:

-Reduced pain

-Increased energy

-Enhanced confidence

-Improved athletic performance

-And even a boost to digestion (what?)

These results are possible because posture and spinal alignment are tied together, meaning poor posture lends itself toward misalignments which can put pressure on nerves throughout the body, altering body function.

Improved posture means better weight bearing and force dispersion, decreasing the wear and tear on your joints, and preserving spine and nerve function.  So your whole body works better.

The best Improvements in posture and pain relief are attained through exercise and Chiropractic care as seen in the following study:

Bronfort et al. (2001) - A randomized clinical trial of exercise and spinal manipulation for patients with chronic neck pain

Or this one where spinal manipulation out-performed stabilizing exercises head to head:

Sethi et al. (2017) - Effect of spinal manipulation on postural instability in patients with non-specific low back pain

I hope my Initial Steps packet (free here) is all you ever need to maintain good posture

If you want a “push” in the right direction (chiropractic pun intended) I’m here for you…

Should chiropractic be a last resort?

Chiropractic care is often pushed to the back of the line when it comes to our health, used as a last resort when nothing else seems to help.  Perhaps it should be your first thought instead of your last.  Here's why...

Posture Perfect

We’ve all heard posture is important, but we keep finding ourselves slouched, hunched, bent-over, leaning, or just plain slumpy (the technical term of course).  So why does it matter, why do we keep failing, and what can we do about it?
